A Look Back At My Favorite MAC LE Collections

There's something about these limited edition makeup collection that just makes us line up for much-coveted items in pretty packaging and shades which enchant us. How many of us have ordered online for that one lipstick and pray to the world that it makes it in your checkout counter and cried when something gets sold out?

There are some LE (limited edition) collector's items which I have lined up for as they are close to my heart. They stay with me for a time, up until it's time to Back to MAC the containers with a heavy heart.

So here are my favorite MAC limited edition collections of all time, in no particular order.

Barbie Loves MAC (2007)

Every little girl went through their Barbie doll phase. My Barbie dolls were of the 80s and 90s - the round, blue eyes, big blond hair, and curvy Barbie dolls and the boxes that screamed pink. My Barbie dolls were like characters out of my make-believe storybook. I wasn't much of the fashionista kid who would do fashion shows and all. I'd make stories and fairy tales and even fan fics from my dolls. Yes guys, before blogging actually existed, I was somewhat "blogging" in my head with fan fics out of my dolls. This collection holds something dear to me because its launch marked the time when I began with makeup.


MAC Hello Kitty (2008)

I love Hello Kitty! I'm a cat lady, come on! The packaging was as gorgeous as the contents. The collection can actually create a lot of looks from natural and pretty to funky. Most of the accessories though were not carried by the Philippines from what I remember but I was already happy owning the makeup. Fun and Games was my favorite warm peach blush.


MAC Alexander McQueen (2007)

This collection did not reach the Philippines but I was oohing and aaahing at the swatches online. The cool colors and the Egyptian-inspired lookbook were just absolute beauties. I still have the iconic Egyptian eye look as a reference peg and I'm just waiting for the right shoot to be able to execute this.


MAC Venomous Villains (2010)

Disney takes a darker take in this collection. I love my Disney princess (my ultimate favorite is Ariel, with Mulan and Elsa being runners up) but the Villains make my heart skip a beat. This and Maleficent were both collections I went for. I went to the mall in Makati from Manila for my Cruella lipstick. The villains are such complex characters, and really guys, without the villains, the story would be so flat.


MAC Wonder Woman (2011)

Who doesn't love Wonder Woman? Yes, I am talking to the friends of mine who love this invisible jet-driving superhero. The packaging brings us back to the retro era of Wonder Woman that's just so hard to let go when it's time to go Back to MAC. Who has bought Russian Red in this packaging even though Russian Red is here to stay forever? This collection made me wear plummy lipstick (Spitfire), and I was surprised I could actually pull it off.

90s Clothing Brands That We Miss

Time for Throwback Thursday! This time, I would like to compile a list of clothing brands, both local and international that have been very popular during the 90s and early 2000s. These brands were in almost every college and/or highschool girl's closet and are the usual go-to places for gifts for debuts, and birthdays and are friendly too for college student allowance and lifestyle.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find photos online of the stores or at least a shot of their clothes so I could share it with those who are not familiar with them,. So if you still have photos of of the store or you wearing those items, take a photo and post it on Instagram and tag me @bambikitty so we could live these memories together, okay? If these stores though that still exist, do let me know as well.

Sari-Sari

Sari-Sari was the prom dress ng bayan store. With Sari-Sari's clean, simple lines, classic style, and neutral palette, girls were able to find affordable RTW gowns and evening dresses that they can wear to formals such as their prom, a friend's debut, and maybe even lent it for their younger sister to wear.

Anonymous

Anonymous is the sister company of Sari-Sari. It had the same minimalist look their store had. This brand was part of my college life as my go-to source for new tops and accessories or birthday gifts to give to friends with college student-friendly budget. I remember purchasing their tank tops and baby tees in ziplocks and Chinese takeout boxes. They also had their hair accessories and sunglasses packaged in this manner. Aside from apparel, they also sold snacks and bath and body products. Another sister company, Fish, also was very popular among young girls and it had the same look.

All Boxed Up (A.B.U.)

This place was shorts heaven - from comfy boxer shorts to wear at home to shorts to wear when going out or on the beach. A.B.U. had a shop in the old Glorietta mall before the 2007 explosion. I had high hopes that this brand would be active as it still had an existing Facebook account with its last update being 2011. Unfortunately, when I passed by the old location in Alabang Town Center last week, the shop no longer exists.

Morgan de Toi

Morgan de Toi is a European clothing brand brought by Cinderella. This brand still exists internationally but is no longer available in the Philippines. If you were a fan of this brand in the 90s, you can still catch it online or abroad like Europe or Thailand.

Tokyo Fashion

Tokyo Fashion is another go-to store for dresses and separates that can be worn for formals and parties. It had funky, sleek, and classic in one store. I still have the long black Tokyo Fashion skirt I bought in third year high school. I haven't fitted it for quite some time, though. You can also purchase your first few pairs of slacks that you would be needing for your first job.

Soda

Blue Soda (or Soda Man) and Pink Soda were brands that were super popular among teens  and has been part of most of the 90's and early 2000's college life with casual wardrobe that's affordable and comfy to wear everyday. I read about it closing finally in this article, with the real cause unknown.

A Look Back: Throwback Items in Our Kikay Kit

I grew up in the 90's and although the fashion and trends weren't super mega distinct like shoulder pads and big hair during the 80's, the subdued trends of the 90's had a sort of classic appeal on its own. In fact, it's been recycled fairly recently with the babydoll clothes, brown lippies, chunky heels, and leather chokers making a comeback. The only heels I wear lately for events are actually very 90's inspired, chosen by Kate. I liked it since it was chunky and sturdy and less likely that I would trip. No, I shall not post a 90's photo of teenage me from my baul because that would probably make me lose my beauty writer credibility with the makeup faux pass I had back then.

The 90's also was probably the time I started collecting items for that tiny kikay kit I had tucked in the corner of my schoolbag or the few items in my mini backpack I'd use when I would go to the mall. Writing this blog post for a #FlashbackFriday at my part of the world or #ThrowbackThursday on your part, stuff like these sort of made me smile. I don't know if this awakened the makeup artist/beauty writer gene that I have though, since I didn't know how to put on makeup back then. Besides, school didn't allow it.

So here were the beauty items I had stashed in my own kit. Any one of you notice your favorites?

Bath and Body Works

This brand is probably in every high school girl's bag back then, and a #1 pasalubong list or an item to hoard during that summer vacation to the US. The fruity scents were fresh and youthful, but more grown-up than the Angel's cologne you wore during grade school. Sun Ripened Raspberry, Juniper Breeze, Country Apple, Plumeria, Sweet Pea, Fresh Pineapple, the list goes on and on. I purchased a bottle of Juniper Breeze just a few days ago, and even though the package has changed, it still has that same scent.

Hard Candy Polish

Long ago, polish colors were red, pink, peach, white (for french tips) and neutral. The colors were too tita for a high school girl to wear on weekends since school did not allow nail polish. So happy that there were brands that had fun colors to wear for young girls. One such favorite 90s brand is Hard Candy, and although they have changed their packaging, the favorite is still the iconic 90s packaging complete with the ring. I had one shade of this, which was yellow, I don't know where the ring went now though. I hope Hard Candy releases a few shades here in the Philippines because I will be just so happy to score a few shades, especially that pretty powder blue shade.

Bonne Bell Lip Smackers

There was a time that I chose lip color not by the actual color but by the flavor and scent. These sheer-tinted lipglosses and lip balms were almost dessert-like. I found myself leaning towards the berry, mocha, and sweet vanilla flavors. Lip Smackers are still very much alive today with new fun flavors like Coca-Cola Classic, Salted Pretzel, and Pink Velvet Gelato

The Paddle Brush

Before VS Supermodels and Cosmo magazine covers made me embrace my naturally big hair, I would have a big paddle brush to help flatten my hair straight as the length of my hair never seemed to weigh my hair down. Poker-straight hair became in way up until the early 2000s. The paddle brush never made my hair super duper straight and flat as I wanted it to be up until I embraced the  beach waves I have all year round. I still have a paddle brush (2 in fact) now, but when I wear my hair straight, it's now straight with volume, like a donya from the parlor.

Johnson's Pressed Powder in Beige

It was 1998, I forgot the exact name, but this and a few oil-control sheets saved me from teenage midday shine. Since MAC Studiofix was too much for my pocket and my teenage skin, this one was bought from the grocery and made me look less espasol-like than putting baby powder on my face. The pink compact was also easy-to-spot. This and lip smackers were probably the makeup I ever owned. I didn't even think of using eye cream because I worried less about wrinkles then. Actually, I worried less about anything in the world then. Life was much simple, no?
